[From the museums Fest-Of-All announcement.]
NOTE: Timberjack was actually shown inside due to forest fire smoke outside.
Our Saturday night showing of Timberjack September 15 was one of the best attended performances in the entire Polson Fest-of-All. All attendees enjoyed seeing the film partially filmed right here in Polson. It even showed the Feil/ Klein/ Mahugh place and Dewey Lumber sawmill! Karissa Koberg entertained us with period pieces she played on the piano before the movie started. Bill Olson played a DVD of the movie. We will be getting a copy for the Museums permanent collection. Brian Mahugh gave us a copy of the movie poster and we have a copy of the theme song music. We will probably show it again.
[From the 9/07 newsletter by Joanne Mangels.]
The man with the DVD player who has connections with the Montana Film Board, introducing the flick Timberjack. He said that only two 35 mm prints of this film are known to remain (in Missoula). At the beginning of the show, 35 people were present, but then all the vacant chairs filled quickly and several more people came in with their own chairs. 45 - 50 people (est.) viewed this DVD movie presentation.
Left, this lady remembers the film being shot, using the exterior of her house. Another guy (not shown) said that the exterior of a cabin he bought was also used in the film. Both said that all interior shots were done on a Hollywood sound stage. Right, giving instructions to watch for local locations and extras in the film. The steam locomotive used in the film was parked at Bonner for many years thereafter. The hand-powered rail speeder was quaint. Local sawyers & loggers, an overhead-cable log skidder (steam donkey powered), a log push-off into the lake, the old sawmill in Polson, a logging tugboat (smaller than the Paul Bunyan according to Gil), Polson Bay of Flathead Lake, St. Mary Lake, and the Swan/Mission Ranges were also visible in the film.
The title and stars of the film. Rumor has it that the leading lady was married to a studio boss, and when John Wayne starred with her in a different film, he said that he would rather give up acting than work with her again.
The girl, the good guy, and the bad guy. These screen shots were time exposures, so they're a little blurry. |

This was the first year for the Flathead Fest-Of-All in Polson MT. Events were scheduled both sequentially and simultaneously, so multiple things were going on at both the fairgrounds and high school gym. Also available were sidetrips to downtown, the airport, Glacier Brewery, Montana Brewing Heritage Museum, Raleigh's Bar & Grill, and Miracle of America Museum, for stand-alone events. Some events incurred a direct charge, some required an FP ticket, and some were free to all who showed up.
I attended the Flathead Fest-Of-All on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons, in order to take photos for this web page. I missed a lot of events, but the ones I did attend had lighter attendance than expected. That can happen the first year or two of a new festival like this, as both organizers and attendees adjust to each others expectations. -JS
NOTE: I dont have any pictures from the Flathead Fest-Of-All on Tuesday, September 11, or Friday, September 14, because I didnt attend any events on those days. -JS
